Dependency of mitochondrial energy metabolism on inositol-pyrophosphate-driven microtubule logistics (A02)

The dovetailing of on-demand energy production by mitochondria with the internal growth programme of a cell, requires intensive crosstalk between mitochondrial organelles and a cytoskeletal cellular highway. In this project, we use the fission yeast S. pombe to understand how mitochondria performance depends on its association with the microtubule cytoskeleton. In turn, the bidirectional mitochondria-microtubule interface is controlled by a class of high-energy signalling molecules, the inositol pyrophosphates that act as environmental sensors. Thus, our project will dissect how mitochondria function has been integrated into the cell´s spatial network and how this crosstalk is modulated by responders to physiological stresses.
