Educational Programme
MibiNeⓍt’s educational program is designed to foster both scientific and transferable skills of early career scientists (including PhD students and postdocs) to prepare them for the interdisciplinary challenges of their research projects and their individual professional careers.
Particular emphasis is placed on ensuring that the training program interferes as little as possible with experimental work. To ensure this, early career scientists have the opportunity to arrange the modules offered in a way that is most compatible with laboratory work.
Overview of the 4-year training program
Scientific training
MibiNeⓍt seminar
MibiNeⓍt seminars provide an opportunity for regular reports from PhD students and postdocs and for scientific discourse. To promote networking beyond the boundaries of MibiNet, external speakers are regularly (4-5 per year) invited by the ECRs to give presentations in this seminar.

Duration | 1 hour seminar (20 minutes talks + 10 minutes discussions per talk, two talk per seminar) |
Type | Hybrid format |
Participants | MibiNet members and friends |

Journal club
The journal club provides the opportunity to present and discuss MibiNet relevant literature.

MibiNeⓍt workshops
To provide optimal and individualised training, we will offer methodological training modules. The MibiNeⓍt specific workshops will cover state-of-the art methodology, including imaging technologies, image data analysis, optogenetics, biosensor design, omics techniques (metabolomics, NGS), synthetic microbiology, mathematical modelling and single-cell analysis (including live-cell imaging in microfluidic devices and flow cytometry).
Since decades life sciences consequently and successively are moving into a quantitative direction. In the computational modules the early career scientists of MibiNeⓍt will learn how to analyse and interpret their data in the context of theoretical models. With our programme we make sure that the early career researchers are prepared for the job market seeking quantitative biologists.
Organizer | PI of MibiNet |
Duration | 3-4 days |
Type | Theoretical and practical |
Participants | MibiNeⓍt members and associated members |
Participation in at least one workshop is mandatory |
MibiNeⓍt retreat & symposium
The annual retreat provides the time and space for a more intensive engagement with MibiNet’s vision and goals and to initiate new collaborations. The retreat will include status reports of all projects, presentations by invited external speakers and a social programme.
In the fourth year, the International Symposium on 'Microbial Networking' will be the culmination of CRC networking activities. Here, the highlights of MibiNet research results will be presented and international researchers and experts in the field will be invited to give plenary lectures. Early career researchers will have the opportunities for networking in the frame of round-table discussion.
Transferable skills
The "Interdisciplinary Graduate and Research Academy Düsseldorf" (iGRAD) was established at HHU to support structured doctoral research. iGRAD offers various courses, e.g., "Good Scientific Practice", presentation skills, scientific discussion skills, scientific writing skills, required professional qualifications, and career opportunities advisory service.
To participate in the iGRAD workshop program, MibiNet members enrolled at HHU must apply for membership in iGRAD.
